Chang Pei Pei

She played the beautiful, yet tough girl in many swordplay movies during the 60's. She has resumed her status as a major league butt kicker thanks to her brilliant role as the evil Jade Fox in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. She is just as lovely now as she was playing Golden Swallow in the 60's.

- Legendary action heroine Cheng Pei-Pei and her daugther Marsha Yuen Chi-Wai were in Cannes the day before yesterday for a screening the classic kung fu film COME DRINK WITH ME (DAI JUI HUP: lit. BIG DRUNK HERO). Directed by King Hu in 1965, the role of "Golden Swallow" in the film helped cement Cheng's status as an action heroine. Speaking to the audience at the event, Cheng said that she was happy to be at the screening of COME DRINK WITH ME. However, she was most happy about the fact that people have not forgotten King Hu's films.
At the screening, Cheng revealed that she is currently planning a remake of COME DRINK WITH ME. With the success of CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON, Cheng hopes that it will be easier to secure financing for the project. As one of the film's producers, Cheng is planning to have her daughter, Marsha Yuen, play "Golden Swallow" in the remake. Yuen, runner-up to Sonija Kwok Sin-Lei in the Miss Hong Kong 1999 Pageant, left TVB last year after her contract with the company expired. Since then, she has worked on two action films produced by Sharon Yeung Pan-Pan and has immersed herself in kung fu lessons all in a bid to establish herself as a legitimate action heroine.

Oscar hopes high for Ang Lee movie

Year of the tiger: Cheng Pei-pei at the Hong Kong International Film Festival press conference prior to flying to the United States for next Sunday's 73rd Oscars awards ceremony. She predicts Ang Lee's movie will do well.
Martial arts star Cheng Pei-pei, one of the leading actors in Oscar-nominated film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , yesterday expressed confidence the movie would do well in Sunday night's Hollywood ceremony.
"I believe we will win some awards. We stand a high chance in the best foreign film category," said the 55-year-old actress, who is flying to the United States today to join the film's crew in the run-up to the 73rd Oscars awards ceremony.
The runaway hit, directed by Taiwanese director Ang Lee, has picked up 10 nominations, including best film and best director.
The film, which also stars Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh, has already won a number of foreign and Hong Kong prizes, including two Golden Globe awards.
Ms Cheng, who plays a bandit in the martial arts fantasy, also predicted Mr Ang would win best director.
However, she said the Western background of the judges made it hard to predict how many awards the film would bring home.
"Most of the judges are Caucasian and I am not sure if they buy the idea of a film dominated by Chinese," she said yesterday after a press briefing for the 25th Hong Kong International Film Festival.
"It's not a matter of bias and it would be the same if it happened in China. When you are familiar with the cast in a film, you relate more to it and have a stronger feeling for it," she said.
Meanwhile, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will open its counters on Thursday for bookings for the Hong Kong festival. It will run from April 6 to 21 and screen more than 220 local and foreign films, including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
