![]() Jimmy Wang Yu was and is a huge star in Asia. He has been likened to Clint Eastwood in that he playes a lot of "Dirty Harry" type characters. I find it humerous that he is considered a threatening, tough-guy character in China... He's simply too cute. We really have him, the Shaws and Chang Cheh to thank for the "kung fu movie" we all know and love. Jimmy has worked magic with very few actual skills. He is fabulous as the one-armed Swordsman. (HK gossip alert- he is the one who faced down the triad guys to save Jackie Chan in the '80s...Go Jimmy!) and some new gossip: Straits Times Interactive Nov 30 2000 [singapore] VINDICATED SWORDSMAN: One-armed swordsman star Wang Yu has won his suit against his wife's lover, Chang Chao, who has been sentenced to three months' jail for committing adultery. Last December, Wang apprehended the intimate couple in the same room. Straits Times Interactive DEC 19 1999 [singapore] You fool with my wife, you pay for it! Real-Life DramaWang Yu, the One-Armed Swordsman, battles Chang Chao, the allegedvillain in a saga of love and adultery A life that is littered with scandals ONE might have thought the One-Armed Swordsman was back fightingvillains on the big screen. And why not? In what could have been a scene out of the movies, former Taiwaneseactor Wang Yu -- along with the police and his friends -- kicked down the door of a Taipei condominium at 2.20 am last Tuesday and caught his lingerie-clad wife together with a man in his briefs. Then, Wang, better known for his role as the One-Armed Swordsman in the famous Shaw Brothers movie in 1976, said dramatically: "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!" And, with a line that could have come out of a Chinese soap opera, he said to the shocked man who was on the bed: "Don't you know she is Wang Yu's wife? If you fool around with someone else's wife, you will have to pay for it." After giving his statements at the police station together with his wife, Wang Kai-chen, 43 and the alleged lover, Chang Chao, 42, the 56-year-old former actor unburdened his grief on the media --unravelling a story that could have been a scriptwriter's dream. He had met Kai-chen, a former air stewardess, on a plane in 1977, and they got married in the United States after a two-month courtship. At that time, he had already divorced actress Lin Tsui, who had earlier left her former husband, director Qin Jian, and their three children, to marry him. The actress, who died from asthma in 1995, had three daughters with Wang, one of whom is singer Linda Wong, 21. The three girls, under Wang's custody, were brought up by Kai-Chen. However, the happy family broke up when Kai-chen walked out on the former actor two years ago, citing personality differences. The third party in this scandal, Chang, is a divorcee. Said to be the most eligible bachelor in Taiwan, he heads a Kuomintang-owned gas company, and is rising fast both in the political and economic scene. The actor told the media that he would not charge his wife in court. But he would make Chang admit to interfering with his marriage. Under Taiwanese law, it is a criminal offence for an adulterous couple to becaught in bed. If found guilty, Chang could face a sentence of up to seven years in prison. The former actor, now a businessman, was apparently heart-broken when his wife left him. "I knelt down, I cried, I begged her to stay," he told reporters. "I asked her to give me a chance." He had also refused to sign the divorce papers, saying that he hoped for a reconciliation. However, he did plan Tuesday's showdown. He had heard about Chang from his daughter, Linda, a few months ago. When his wife insisted Chang was an ordinary friend, he started investigations. "From his car licence-plate number, I found out that they had taken aplane to America and had stayed in the same hotel. When they returned, I learnt they were neighbours living in a condominum two units apart. "Ten days ago, I faxed my wife a note, telling her: 'A man's most basic need is the need for face. Please give me some face.' " His wife replied that she would leave Chang if the former actor would sign the divorce papers. "But I discovered that they were plotting to gather evidence against me for the divorce. So I decided to catch them together. If I had been able to tolerate it, I would not have committed such a shameful act," he said. He added that he had to catch them unawares as he feared they would escape through a doorway between their houses. They had apparently chosen to stay in a condominium with a linking doorway, through which they could meet secretly. The former actor said he called out "Merry Christmas" to make the couple mad. Chang, the alleged third party, told the police he did not know why Kai-chen was standing in his bedroom. In the meanwhile, Kai-chen claimed she was discussing things with Chang in the room, and then that she was there to get medicine from him and that there was no sex between them. Will the former actor be reconciled with his wife? "After apprehending her, my feelings for her are dead," he declared. |
